Sulfur dioxide


Sulfur dioxide is the most common, simple and irritating sulfur oxide, chemical formula SO2, colorless gas. Volcanic eruptions emit this gas, and sulfur dioxide is also produced in many industrial processes. As coal and oil usually contain sulfur, sulfur dioxide will be generated when burning. When sulfur dioxide is dissolved in water, it will form sulfite.

Purpose:

1. Used as organic solvent and refrigerant, and used to refine various lubricating oils.

2. It is mainly used to produce sulfur trioxide, sulfuric acid, sulfite, thiosulfate, as well as fumigant, preservative, disinfectant, reducing agent, etc.

3. Sulfur dioxide is a reductive bleaching agent allowed in China. It can bleach food and strongly inhibit the oxidase in vegetable food. According to Chinese regulations, it can be used for wine and fruit wine. The maximum dosage is 0.25g/kg, and the residue shall not exceed 0.05g/kg.

4. Industrial sectors such as pesticides, man-made fibers and dyes.

5. It is used to produce sulfur and as insecticide and bactericide.

6. According to Claude Ribbe's book Napoleon's Crime, sulfur dioxide was used as a poison by some monarchs in Haiti in the early 19th century to suppress the rebellion of slaves.

Storage method:

Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse. Keep away from kindling and heat source. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30 ℃. It shall be stored separately from combustibles, oxidants, reducing agents and edible chemicals, and shall not be mixed. The storage area shall be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment.
